A Pilot Program in Greater Richmond

The Soundscapes program in Chesterfield was born from a simple but powerful belief that every child should have access to the life-changing opportunities music can provide. A dedicated group of community leaders created Play4RVA and spent two years exploring how an El Sistema-inspired program could take root in Greater Richmond. Following a successful feasibility study in 2024, Play4RVA partnered with Soundscapes and Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation to launch an after-school music program in Chesterfield.

The pilot was a success. Students discovered more than music. They built confidence, learned to work together, developed perseverance, and found a place where they belonged. Families embraced the program, proving that the need for accessible, high-quality music education in Central Virginia is real.

Today, Soundscapes is building on that momentum by continuing and growing programming in Chesterfield.

At Soundscapes, music is the vehicle, but transformation is the destination. Every rehearsal helps young people develop the confidence, resilience, and life skills they need to succeed in school, at home, and in their communities.

Together with Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation, Play4RVA, and supporters who believe in the potential of every child, we’re creating opportunities that will resonate for years to come.

Proven Impact

Soundscapes brings over a decade of proven impact to this work. Ten years of data show that as students develop their musical abilities, they also build essential life skills at the same pace. That means as their musical skills grow, the soft skills they need to be successful in the classroom and the workplace grow, too.

Participants and the community can expect:

βœ” Increased engagement in school
βœ” Improved social-emotional health
βœ” Fewer risky behaviors
βœ” Preparation for long-term success
