Meet Tonight’s Conductors

Reynaldo Ramirez
Symphony Orchestra Conductor

Reynaldo Ramirez is a co-founding director of Soundscapes and the principal conductor for Peninsula Youth Orchestra. He is also a founding board member of El Sistema, which heavily inspired Soundscapes’ creation.

Reynaldo received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Texas in 2001, and his Master’s Degree from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in 2003, both in Horn Performance.  He served as the Senior Director of Education and Community Development for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Director for Education and Community Engagement for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. He has been a music educator for more than 20 years and continues to be a freelance hornist, performing with various arts organizations including the Virginia Symphony, Las Vegas Philharmonic, and the Virginia Arts Festival.

Wesley Benson
Wind Ensemble Conductor

Westley Benson graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Peabody Institute. He began studying piano and percussion at age five. He has taught piano and percussion to several students in the Hampton Roads area and continues to maintain a roster of active student musicians. He is the Music Director of the Doorway Singers. He is currently the Wind Band Director for Soundscapes.

William Hederer
String Orchestra Conductor

In 2016 William Hederer earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in String Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University. For the past five years he has taught with Soundscapes and at two Newport News Public Schools. In 2018 he attended the Certification of Professional Development VCU Conducting Workshop/ Professional Development Clinic under Daniel Myssyk. In 2019 he was accepted to participate in Wintergreen Music Academy’s Conductors Summit under the direction of Erin Freeman and Victor Yampolsky.

Suzanne Warner
Guest Conductor

Playing since 1989 and teaching since 2005, Suzanne Warner has a passion to develop youth through music. She holds a bachelors degree from Bob Jones, University, and a masters from Old Dominion University. She has played seasons in Kansas City,  Missouri, for the Independence Symphony Orchestra, which became the Heritage Philharmonic, as well as Symphonicity in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Teaching and conducting string orchestras for Liberty Academy of the Arts 2009-2018 and Summit Academy 2017-2018 brought her
passion into focus.

Joe Hamm
Guest Conductor

Storytelling through music composition, filmmaking, and photography engages Joe’s efforts to advance the social and musical goals of Soundscapes. He is a professional drummer, teaching artist, recording artist, and a folder of large pizza slices. Powered by the sun, Joe lives carbon neutral with his partner Paige and their enthusiastic dogs Tidus & Luna!

Joe has been a Teaching Artist with Soundscapes since the beginning and leads our Creative Composition courses.
