Position summary
Teach Level 2–4 cello and string bass students (beginner → intermediate/advanced). You will model high musicianship, teach technique and ensemble skills, prepare repertoire and performances, and build strong relationships with students and families. The Low Strings Teaching Artist will bring both musical excellence and a deep commitment to the growth of young people. This role is ideal for a musician who thrives in a collaborative, community-centered environment and sees teaching as a way to inspire confidence, curiosity, and connection in students. This role requires collaboration with teaching artists, participation in professional learning, and occasional evenings/weekends for performances or events.

Core responsibilities
  • Teach cello/string bass technique and ensemble rehearsal for Levels 2–4
  • Prepare age-appropriate repertoire and lead students to performance readiness
  • Perform with/for students to model artistry and inspire learning
  • Maintain a structured, inclusive classroom and support daily transitions
  • Track student progress and communicate with families about achievements
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and program planning
  • Attend required performances, field trips, and occasional weekend/evening events
  • Collaborate with colleagues to strengthen curriculum and student outcomes
  • Complete administrative tasks and maintain accurate records 
Qualifications
  • Minimum 4 years experience in string pedagogy and performance (cello or bass preferred)
  • Strong musicianship and demonstrated success teaching young ensembles
  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills with students, families, and staff
  • Organized, reliable, and adaptable in a dynamic after-school setting
  • Comfortable with Google Drive/Docs/Sheets/Classroom; reliable transportation
  • Employment contingent on background check; finalists will teach/perform on principal instrument during interview

Location: Hybrid — Beulah Recreation Center (Chesterfield County, VA) + remote (Greater Richmond area); occasional travel to Newport News for onboarding/professional development (mileage reimbursed)
Compensation: $27,500 annually (part-time, 20 hours/week)
Start Date: Fall 2025

Organizational Overview
Soundscapes is a nonprofit youth development organization that uses music education and ensemble performance to inspire and empower students from under-resourced communities. Soundscapes programs help children build life skills through the transformative power of music. Founded in 2009 in Newport News, Soundscapes now serves over 300 students annually, ages 7 to 25. Soundscapes is growing and intends to launch a new pilot program in the Greater Richmond area during the upcoming school year.

Position Summary
The Program Manager for Soundscapes at the Beulah Recreation Center will play a key role in launching Soundscapes’ Chesterfield hub. This role combines program leadership with community-building and requires a strong background in music education and an entrepreneurial drive. In the first year, the focus is on building partnerships, hiring and supporting teaching staff, and overseeing a pilot program serving 2nd and 3rd-grade students.

Work Arrangement (Hybrid)
This is a hybrid role. Regular on-site time at the Beulah Recreation Center is required for program setup, registration, partner meetings, hiring/training, and—January to May 2026—program days (3 days/week). Remaining hours may be completed remotely for planning, curriculum development, staff supervision, and administrative tasks. Some evenings/weekends as needed. A reliable internet connection and availability during Eastern Time work hours are expected.

Key Responsibilities

Program Launch & Leadership (Fall 2025)
• Collaborate with the Soundscapes Program Manager and the Greater Richmond development team to establish Soundscapes’ presence in Chesterfield County.
• Build strong partnerships with Chesterfield County representatives, Beulah Recreation Center leadership, and nearby elementary schools.
• Hire and supervise a new Level 1 Manager, with support from the Soundscapes Level 1 Supervisor.
• Register students from two nearby elementary schools; coordinate facilities use and site logistics; order equipment and supplies.

Instruction & Training (Jan–May 2026)
• Lead a three‑day‑per‑week pilot program at Beulah Recreation Center for approximately 25 2nd and 3rd graders.
• Train, coach, and mentor teaching artists and staff to ensure program quality and fidelity to the Soundscapes model.
• Facilitate program tours for partners and stakeholders; engage families and community leaders.

Professional Development (Fall 2025)
• Participate in a structured onboarding process in Newport News, visiting Soundscapes’ three daily programs to observe classes and learn from experienced staff.
• Work directly with the Co‑Founder and Program Manager and the administrative staff to learn Soundscapes’ mission, values, and standard practices.
• Apply training to ensure fidelity to the model while adapting to local community needs.
• Mileage reimbursement is provided for required travel to Newport News.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in music education, performance, arts administration, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
• 3–5+ years of teaching or ensemble leadership experience, preferably in community‑based or youth‑focused settings.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and manage teaching staff.
• Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills; comfortable operating in a start‑up program environment.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred, given the high Hispanic population served.
• Entrepreneurial spirit and passion for music as a vehicle for social change.
• Reliable transportation is required for local/regional duties and onboarding travel.
• Ability to drive a 15‑passenger van/box truck.

Schedule, Compensation & Benefits
• Part‑time position beginning Fall 2025 at 20 hours/week, with anticipated growth as the program expands. Program days will be scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays starting January 2026.
• Salary: $27,500 annually (part‑time).

Job Title: Greenwood Program Manager (1‑Year, Renewable)
Site: Greenwood Elementary (Newport News, VA)
Status: Part‑Time, Non‑Exempt (~8–12 hours/week during program year)
Term: One‑year appointment (renewable based on performance, funding, and program schedule)
Program Year Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday after‑school (3:30 pm to ~7:00 pm); 28 complete weeks of programming, plus performances and occasional weekend/evening events
Reports to: Program Director
Supervises: Assistant Program Manager (also Jazz Band Director/Level 2 Team Lead); coordinates Teaching Artists, support staff, and volunteers
Compensation & Benefits: Salary $17,500 for the 2025–26 program year (prorated), paid twice monthly. Benefits include dental insurance (employee), SIMPLE IRA with employer match, limited PTO and sick leave. Exact compensation and benefits confirmed at offer.

Summary
The Greenwood Program Manager oversees all operations of Soundscapes’ three‑day after‑school program at Greenwood Elementary. This role manages staff, scheduling, daily site logistics, behavior systems, meals/snacks, transportation, family communication, evaluation/data, and event logistics. This is primarily an education program management and operations position—a background in music is welcomed but not required. The Manager works closely with the Jazz Band Director and Level 1 Supervisor to provide artistic leadership and program continuity.
Note: This posting is for the 2025–26 program year (Mon/Wed/Thu; 28 weeks). Soundscapes anticipates returning to a four‑day schedule the following year, subject to funding and partner needs.

Responsibilities
• Staff Management & Culture: Lead a cohesive site team, including the Assistant PM; supervise staff and substitutes; onboard and support volunteers and visiting artists.
• Daily Operations: Direct staff and student schedules, attendance, behavioral referrals, meals/snacks, and communications; ensure smooth daily operations.
• Behavior Systems: Respond to and manage behavior issues consistently and equitably.
• Enrollment & Outreach: Recruit, register, manage waitlists, and backfill openings equitably.
• School Liaison: Serve as primary contact with Greenwood administration for space use, calendars, and events.
• Events & Performances: Plan and manage event schedules, meals, volunteer coordination, and equipment logistics.
• Transportation: Coordinate dismissal and transportation with liaison; drive vans when required (training provided).
• Music & Materials Coordination: Oversee distribution of music and materials; manage instrument inventory with simple tracking tools.
• Data & Reporting: Collect and maintain attendance, evaluation, and behavior data; generate reports for Soundscapes and school partners.
• Other Duties: As assigned by the Program Director.

• Staff supervision, scheduling, and family communication experience.

• Proficiency in Google Workspace/Microsoft Office; willingness to learn databases. - Valid driver’s license; available for some evenings/weekends.

Preferred
• Bachelor’s in education, youth development, arts administration, or related field (music background welcome but not required).
• Experience supervising part‑time staff/volunteers.
• Ability to drive a 15‑passenger van/box truck (training provided).
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
